US college basketball coaches value 'chemistry of the kids'

29 July 2016

Australian players are building a big reputation in the NBA, with No.1 draft pick Ben Simmons about to join the likes of Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova and Dante Exum. Who will be next?

In an Australian first, more than 30 of Australia’s young prospects showed off their skills at the AIS in front of 25 US coaches from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

“The US coaches when they come out here are looking for athletes that are maintenance free which Aussies are,” says Jan Stirling Basketball Australia’s High Performance General Manager.

Chris Harriman head Associate coach at the University of New Mexico agrees.

“If a lot of these kids were playing in the US they would be a lot more heavily recruited”.
