More than 400 high-performance coaches are now connected across Australia thanks to the AIS National Coach Network (NCN) initiative.

Melbourne-based NCN members came together for the network’s first face-to-face meeting, an exclusive session with internationally renowned strength coach Rett Larson on how to ‘weaponise’ their warmups.

Launched in mid-2022, the NCN offers a mix of unique learning opportunities via newsletters, webinars and face-to-face workshops and has delivered members to a range of special guests including Penrith Panthers Head Coach Ivan Cleary, Australian Diamonds Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich, Para Table Tennis Head Coach Alois Rosario and Kookaburras Head Coach Colin Batch.

In April, the Melbourne-based members' first face-to-face meeting was an exclusive session with internationally renowned strength coach Rett Larson on how to ‘weaponise’ their warmups.

Larson, the strength coach for the national women's volleyball team in Germany, provided members with his insights into warmups which he believes is the most under-utilised component of an athlete’s training regime.

The event, run in partnership with the Victorian Institute of Sport, saw twenty coaches representing ten different sports including baseball, fencing, diving and cycling, immerse themselves in the interactive session and connect with each other.

Head of Methodology at AusCycling Brenton Jones found the interactive workshop invaluable.

“It definitely broadened my understanding of warmups and how I can implement that in my sport. I’m really excited to see what we can do in the future when it comes to engaging with elite athletes and coaches themselves.”

Taekwondo coach Murat Eryurek said he joined the network to further his professional development.

“I joined the network simply just to educate myself and improve my style of coaching as a lot of our athletes have changed over the years...so hopefully with the education that I get I'll become a better coach.”

The next NCN live event will be held this June in Adelaide in partnership with the South Australian Sports Institute.
