Wheelchair quad tennis is making its debut on the hallowed grass courts of Wimbledon tonight (Australian time), and AIS Applied Technology and Innovation is assisting in the sport’s progress.
Australia’s Paralympic gold medallists Dylan Alcott and Heath Davidson will compete in an exhibition match at Wimbledon in custom wheelchairs modified by AIS sport science.
AIS senior sport engineer Matt Crawford has been working with Alcott and Davidson on their wheelchair designs since before the pair claimed gold at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
“It’s fantastic progress for the sport to see wonderful athletes like Dylan and Heath get the chance to play at Wimbledon,” Crawford said.
“There’s also an element of pride that the AIS Applied technology and Innovation has been working closely with them on their individuals wheelchair designs to assist their own progress.
“For a few years now we’ve been using data, technology and engineering to fine tune their wheelchair designs, trying to make them s more agile while also ensuring they maintain the ultimate balance required.
“Dylan and Heath are amazing athletes and it’s been a satisfying project to work with these guys and to see them become such successful ambassadors for their sport.”
