ASC supporting ACT’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout

27 August 2021

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is pleased to support the ACT’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout and has approved an ACT Government request to use the AIS Arena as a mass vaccination clinic.

The COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Clinic at the AIS Arena will open on Friday 3 September and replaces the mass vaccination clinic currently located at the Garran Surge Centre.

The AIS Arena has been closed to the public since March 2020, with the ASC working closely with ACT Health and contractors to undertake appropriate works to allow safe operation of the Arena for use as a vaccination site.

The Arena is opening to support ACT Health’s mass vaccination program and will not open for any other public use.

“This move to the AIS Arena means more Canberrans will be able to access a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination faster,” Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

“As a bigger site the AIS Arena will allow us to increase appointments to match expected upcoming increases in Pfizer supply.

Federal Minister for Sport Richard Colbeck said the Morrison Government is pleased to support the Canberra community in its recovery efforts.

“The vaccination clinic at the AIS Arena will play an important role in helping the community emerge from the current lockdown restrictions by ensuring those who are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine can get vaccinated as quickly as possible, and is aligned with the Australian Government’s COVID-19 Vaccine Strategy."

"The Morrison Government remains focused on suppressing the virus and delivering the vaccine to anybody willing to roll up their sleeve.

"Getting vaccinated doesn't just protect you. It is another layer of protection for those you love and the communities in which you live and work."

Federal Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja said vaccinations are our path out of the pandemic and is encouraging all eligible Canberrans to book an appointment for a vaccine.

“You can check your eligibility and book an appointment by heading to the Commonwealth Government’s Eligibility Checker, where you can book with the ACT vaccination clinics, or a local GP or pharmacist administering vaccines here in Canberra.”

ACT Health will run the operations of the clinic and be supported by ASC facilities staff.
