More than 70 athletes including from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Guam, Nigeria, Kiribati and Nauru are taking part in the event, the last Tokyo Olympic qualifying event held in Australia.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) event is a Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Bronze Qualification event. Rankings are based on the Robi point system introduced by the IWF in 2018 with athletes receiving points based on their performance at gold, silver and bronze-level weightlifting events.
