From Local Sporting Champion to World Cup hero

16 August 2023

When Cortnee Vine and her family applied for an ASC Local Sporting Champion (LSC) grant in 2010, little did they know that 13 years later she would be sending the Matildas through to their first ever World Cup semi-final.

Vine used her LSC grant to attend the 2010 School Sport Australia 12 years and under Football Championships where she represented Queensland.

From those Championships it was onwards and upwards as the Shepparton product worked her way through the ranks of football in Australia.

Vine debuted in the A-League at 16 years old, represented Australia at several junior tournaments and is now a household name after scoring the winning penalty in the Matildas quarter final win over France in her first World Cup appearance.

She has come a long way since the early days of playing school sport and playing with and against boys at Brisbane’s Deception Bay Football Club, and the ASC is proud to have supported Vine along the way.

LSC grants are now available for the next generation of coaches, officials and competitors aged 12-18 years old attending state, national or international championships.
