Kamilaroi man Kurtis Leslie is seeking Indigenous coaches, officials, sport administrators, and athlete leaders from Olympic and Paralympic sports to participate in a PhD study on their experiences in high performance sport.
The project ‘Indigenous Experiences of Sport Leadership: An Inquiry into non-playing roles within High performance Sport in Australia.’ is partially funded by the AIS. It seeks to explore the experience of Indigenous people within the Australian high performance sporting system and evaluate what barriers Indigenous athletes face when pursuing leadership positions.
Participants will be asked about their pathways into, and experiences in high performance sport settings across one or two individual yarns. This is the first time the AIS has engaged in research which employs yarning methodologies.
These yarns will be with Kurtis Leslie who is currently living on Noongar Country (Perth, WA). They will be delivered in a culturally sensitive manner and can take place in person, via video conference, or over the phone, and will take around one hour. Participants can speak to their experiences within their current role or a role they previously held.
The goal is to provide a platform where the participant can share their story to influence policy and practice within the Australian sports sector for the purpose of improving Indigenous pathways. This study will also inform and improve Indigenous engagement, participation, and leadership development practices within high performance sports system.
Leslie is a student at Western Sydney University, New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) and the AIS and has received ethics clearance for this study through Western Sydney University.
