Athlete activities on offer in National Careers Week

05 May 2022

Athletes are encouraged to explore their education and career options, with several great events happening around the country during National Careers Week from May 16 – 22.

On Tuesday, May 17 from 12:30pm, the AIS will host a special 60-minute online event with a line-up of experienced athletes. Joining the panel will be James Matheson (Winter Olympian), Melissa Wu (Diving), Mitch Gourley (Winter Paralympian) and Hannah Buckling (Water Polo) to share their stories and advice around planning that next career step.

Those interested in tuning into the panel can email sara.heasly@ausport.gov.au.

Athletes can also attend or tune into several other events and engagement opportunities happening around the country.

The AIS Career Practitioner Referral Network (CPRN) is a great resource for athletes to consider career options. It has supported more than 155 high performance athletes and coaches over the past 12 months.

Last week dozens of athletes attended an AIS career workshop at the Victorian Institute of Sport. Four-time Olympian and track athlete Jeff Riseley said it’s important for athletes to utilise the support and resources on offer.

‘’I just retired and I’m starting to reflect on what I want to do and it’s just a good opportunity to come down here and refine some of my thinking and explore some different topics around my career and what it might look like,’’ said Riseley.

‘’Athletes are pretty curious people so they may have interest in lots of different areas and they’re trying to narrow that down, so just being able to have a resource to identify where your skills are, what actual job opportunities are out there and where to look for them is really beneficial.’’
