Australian Sailing is thrilled to offer its Sporting Schools programs to primary and secondary schools across Australia.
Tackers is a learn to sail program that caters for primary school children aged 7 - 12 and is delivered at recognised Tackers centres. There isn’t a court, a pitch or an oval, instead students can learn new skills through games and adventures to explore beaches, rivers or lakes.
OutThere Sailing is an introductory program aimed at 12 - 14 year old secondary school students wanting to experience sailing in a non-competitive, social and fun environment. Although the focus will be on small and big boats, OutThere Sailing activities can also allow participants to try windsurfing, powerboating and stand up paddle boarding.
Primary Schools
There are two levels of Tackers sailing programs available for primary schools, Tackers Intro and Tackers 1. Students don’t need to have any prior sailing experience and all equipment, including the boats, is provided.
Tackers Intro
Specifically designed for Sporting Schools, this program allows students to get a taste of the wonderful world of sailing. With shorter sessions than Tackers 1, students will get involved in a sailing treasure hunt, paddling race, wind awareness activities, plus they learn about water safety! Program includes:
- 4 hrs coaching by qualified Australian Sailing instructors
- Combination of on and off water games
- Tackers Intro course certificate of completion for students
Tackers 1
Tackers 1 is the first step of the ‘learn to sail’ pathway which teaches students the foundations of sailing. Students develop leadership skills and independence as they progressively learn to manoeuvre their boats in pairs through the activities set out by their qualified instructors. The program includes:
- 10 hours coaching by qualified Australian Sailing instructors (Sporting Schools funded)
- Combination of on and off water games
- Option to complete an additional 10 hours tuition delivered by qualified Australian Sailing instructors (at school or parent cost)
- Nationally recognised Sporting Schools Tackers 1 certificate of completion for students
Secondary Schools
There are four different OutThere Sailing programs available for secondary schools (year 7 and 8), OutThere Sailing Experience, and OutThere Sailing 1 - 3.
OutThere Sailing Experience
OutThere Sailing Experience is all about having fun and getting a taste of sailing. This action packed 4 hour program will give students the opportunity to try a variety of on water activities such as sailing small or big boats, windsurfing, stand up paddle boarding and/or powerboating.
OutThere Sailing 1
OutThere Sailing 1 will give students an introduction to sailing through exciting exercises and fun on water using small or big boats, windsurfers, powerboats or stand up paddle boards.
OutThere Sailing 2
OutThere Sailing 2 will build on the introductory skills learnt in level one. It will have the same philosophy with fun and socialising being the priority.
OutThere Sailing 3
OutThere Sailing 3 has a variety of challenges and skills to master during the program. Still with a focus of fun and hanging out with mates, this program will make students more competent out on the water and in a position to take friends out sailing.
